ECTS 2001: Blizzard announces World of Warcraft
On September 2, 2001, Blizzard revealed its Warcraft MMORPG.
Blizzard announced World of Warcraft at ECTS in London on September 2, 2001. Players would explore Azeroth as individual adventurers, sharing the world with thousands of others. The announcement described quests, character development, familiar Warcraft locations and new territories, moving the series beyond commanding armies in strategy games.
Work had begun earlier. Developer John Staats recalled that a small team was building the project by July 1999, without establishing an exact starting day. The 2001 reveal made the ambition public: Azeroth would become a place to inhabit together, with personal adventures unfolding inside a much larger world.
